**Abstract:** This paper aims to provide understanding of
scattering and re-radiation by a receiving antenna
through a detailed analysis of representatives from the
simplest class of possible antennas, 1-dimensional
antennas. Complete, exact solutions for the
electromagnetic fields associated with such 1-dimensional
environment and antenna structures can be obtained
using only elementary analysis and functions. These exact
solutions may be modeled by transmission line equivalent
circuits. The paper carries this development further,
reconciling the transmission line models with the
traditional antenna equivalent circuit formulation and
the scattering matrix representation of antenna theory, in
the process explaining the various aspects of antennas:
radiation, reception, scattering and re-radiation.
